Periodontology is the part of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament.
Periodontal diseases are usually a result of bacterialplaque biofilm accumulation on the surface of gingiva and teeth in complex with wrong hygiene combined with some other risk factors ( like genetic, and etc.) which lead to chronicle inflammation, swelling and bleeding of gum and then- to reducing and destruction of the supporting gum and bone around natural teeth. Untreated, these diseases lead to alveolar bone loss and teeth moving.
